Advantages of pots

Disadvantages of pots
- Limited root space: Growth is restricted by the pot volume.
- Faster drying out: Especially in summer, much more frequent watering is necessary.
- Faster leaching of nutrients: Especially with frequent watering or heavy rain periods.
- Greater temperature fluctuations: Pots can heat up significantly or cool down more quickly.
- Higher costs: Good pots, high-quality substrate, and additional materials incur more expense.
Plants directly in the ground
Direct planting in the ground is often the more natural and long-term stable solution if good, living topsoil is available on site.
Advantages of in-ground planting
- More space for roots: The plant can develop more freely and anchor itself deeper in the soil.
- Stronger growth: Plants in the ground often develop a more robust and resilient structure.
- Less maintenance: Water and nutrients are usually stored longer, meaning less frequent watering and fertilizing is needed.

Disadvantages of in-ground planting
- Less flexible: Once planted, the location can only be changed with greater effort.
- Greater dependence on the location: Light, soil quality, and water balance must be suitable from the start.
- More direct weather influences: Heavy rain, drought, cold, or frost have a more immediate effect on the plant.
- Garden soil not always ideal: Compacted or depleted soils can restrict growth.
- Less direct control: Structure and nutrient supply cannot be controlled as precisely as in a pot.
Important note on topsoil
In natural topsoil, there is usually significantly more active and diverse microbial activity than in many pot substrates.
